Thornton Academy

The Maine Jr. Mariners are proud to partner with Thornton Academy to provide student-athletes with a true prep school experience that combines elite hockey development with a rigorous and respected academic environment. Thornton Academy, one of Maine’s most well-established independent schools, offers a challenging college preparatory curriculum, dedicated faculty, and a wide range of academic opportunities designed to prepare students for success at top colleges and universities.
Through this partnership, Mariners players attend Thornton Academy during the academic day, where they are immersed in a demanding academic program that emphasizes discipline, critical thinking, and strong study habits. Our players are held to the same high academic standards as all Thornton students while benefiting from the structure and support that comes with being part of a dedicated student-athlete program.
Following classes, players transition into our hockey development schedule, which includes daily on-ice practices, skill development sessions, and team training. The Maine Jr. Mariners compete in a 55+ game season against top junior programs, providing players with high-level competition and significant exposure to NCAA and college hockey programs.
Off the ice, our athletes train with Skolfield Performance, one of the region’s premier strength and conditioning programs. These structured workouts focus on strength, speed, mobility, and injury prevention, helping players develop the physical tools needed to compete at the next level.
The partnership between the Maine Jr. Mariners and Thornton Academy creates a balanced and structured environment where players can grow academically, athletically, and personally. It truly offers a prep school model where student-athletes are challenged in the classroom, developed on the ice, and prepared for both college hockey and higher education.
Financial Aid
The Maine Jr. Mariners are proud to partner with Thornton Academy to provide student-athletes with access to a true prep school education while competing at the highest levels of junior hockey. Through this partnership, families also have access to need-based financial aid opportunities through Thornton Academy’s financial aid program, which uses the Clarity Financial Aid Application to determine a family’s level of financial need.
Financial aid at Thornton Academy is awarded based on a family’s ability to meet educational expenses. Families interested in receiving financial assistance must complete the Clarity Financial Aid Application at the time of applying to Thornton Academy. The Clarity application evaluates a family’s financial profile—including income, assets, expenses, and debts—to determine eligibility for need-based aid. The application is designed to be simple and accessible, typically taking less than 30 minutes to complete and can be submitted from a computer or mobile device. Families may also save their progress and return to complete the application at any time.
Once submitted, the application can also be shared with other schools that accept the Clarity platform at no additional cost, making the process efficient for families exploring multiple academic opportunities.
Through the partnership between the Maine Jr. Mariners and Thornton Academy, qualified student-athletes have the opportunity to pursue a rigorous college preparatory education while developing in a high-level hockey environment. Our goal is to ensure that talented and motivated players have access to both elite hockey development and strong academic opportunities, with need-based financial aid helping make the Thornton Academy experience more accessible to families.

Admissions Interview
As part of the admissions process at Thornton Academy, families may apply for need-based financial aid through the Clarity application. After completing the application and financial aid forms, the final step is scheduling an admissions interview. This conversation helps ensure the student-athlete is a strong fit academically, personally, and within the Maine Jr. Mariners partnership.
